MCG 1:18 diecast model of the 1985 Ford Escort Mk.3 RS Turbo in black, as owned and driven by Princess Diana. Come the end of the 1970s, Ford was aware that the Mk.2 Escort was beginning to show its age, and so it set about developing the all-new Mk.3. It was launched towards the end of 1980 and immediately proved extremely popular. A sporty XR3 variant was offered from the outset, but it was the RS1600i homologation special produced from September 1981 that really elevated the car to cult status. The RS1600i itself wasnt that successful in competition, however, so Ford replaced that with the ultimate incarnation of the Mk.3; the RS Turbo, which went on sale in early 1985.
