The ICE4 “Federal Republic of Germany” formation began operation in 2021 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the start of ICE operations. The commemorative paint job features a body stripe in the colours of the German flag (black, red, and gold (yellow) from top to bottom). It is nicknamed “Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany)” and its name is featured on the side of the leading car. The 13-car formation, called “XXL,” has one more second-class car than the 12-car formation.
